CRO is now Cronos. You can use either ERC20 or CRC20 or Cronos networks. I prefer Cronos.

My CRO are staking on exchange. If I was to send them to a ledger wallet, would staking rewards end?
Have you looked at the crypto.com DeFi Wallet? You can also stake your CRO there.

I like the benefits of staking on exchange and 6 month lockup already ended, so now have flexibility while still receiving rewards. However, the security of ledger storage would have been nice.

Agreed. Which is why I provided the idea of the DeFi Wallet. It's what I use. But, it is completely your choice.
