Cheers, :). I wonder if a back-of-the-hand calculation could show that a certain amount of inflation is plausible to account for the necessary computing power + incentivize block producers to continue doing what they do.

The 0 fees are subsidized by the inflation as noted above. Basically, everyone on the network pays for it but just an incredibly small amount.
