Phones are absolutely backdoored by the NSA, etc. Yes. But if you are hiding from the NSA, you have much bigger problems to worry about.

It depends on who you are trying to prptect yourself from. Hackers? Or the NSA?

And do you think the NSA is stealing people's crypto?

All of them. They are totally susceptible to man-in-the-middle attacks when updating their firmware (which is just software!!). They are also very susceptible to hardware tampering. This has been demonstrated multiple times all over youtube.
