So "Synchronization nodes do not participate in network consensus, and

only synchronizes the blocks generated by the Triones (bookkeeping) nodes." confirms that they are a lot like full node instances on a POW blockchain.

Now the second part, who runs them? Ontology team I guess. If that's the case it's pretty ironic that everything is done in smart contracts and that nobody has to trust each other, but we do have to trust a centralized network...
