Thats a similar approach with zk proofs. Having a full node for the entire history is optional, however not essential. The snapshot is always the point of reference for that trx for example. When you put Mina next to other traditional blockchains, huge differences. Mina dramatically reduces the amount of data each user needs to download. Instead of verifying the entire chain from the beginning of time, participants fully verify the network and transactions using recursive zero knowledge proofs (or zk-SNARKs). Nodes can then store the small proof, as opposed to the entire chain.
I'm really surprised that other projects haven't thought of anything like this before. I believe this kind of small blockchain will become standard someday.
