it is. Let's start from afar :)
If you don’t live under a rock and are able to think at least somewhat analytically you will clearly see that we have some serious issues with the way we govern ourselves. Governance is something that humanity did not crack yet, we have stupid wars, irritating corruption, “geopolitics” and such. Crypto is unfortunately not much better - the promise of decentralization is being diluted by price manipulation, centralized exchanges, and by the fact that crypto has become effectively Forex on steroids, making degenerate traders out of large swathes of population. On one hand there’s a huge progress in technology, on the other we can’t figure out how not to murder each another for nothing. How come?
One can argue that the problem is actually evolutionary. Humanity is around 200 thousands years old, but most of that time we had been hunter-gatherers, living in small tribes and picking up food from the ground. The modern civilization, with the State and social hierarchy, emerged around six thousand years ago. It might be just not enough time for us, as species, to evolve and get used to living in society. Society itself is a pretty new phenomenon, if you look at the Human Sapience history from the evolutionary perspective.
For most of our history we lived in small groups of less than 150 individuals. This is the so-called Dunbar number, it basically limits your social circle by ~150 people, because you cannot maintain social connections with more people than that, your brain can’t handle more people!
To live in societies of millions of people we need governance and a common ground to do so. Something happened around ten thousand years ago, it’s hard to tell what exactly. Humanity could have discovered agriculture, or a pagan deity of some tribe became popular with other tribes, or there could have been some combination of those things but, as a result, we started living in societies.
Societies are built by a centralized power and a common narrative. Centralized power has been the only way to govern societies since their emergence; religion has served as a common narrative most of the time. People need to have a common connection to acknowledge people that don’t belong to their immediate social circle as “non-alien” - a god, a king, a president, shared history and ethnicity… Otherwise they start cracking skulls, that’s how we’re wired.
Strong hand, rigid centralized power built all ancient societies. Only within the last several centuries have we seen more liberal societies build on certain power decentralization and a desire to find a narrative broader than a specific religion or ethnicity to unite people. With the emergence of decentralized tech we can think of a new approach to governance, though.
Decentralized tech gives us basically two things: 1. Transparency 2. Protocol-based interaction.
To harmonize power we need accountability and rules the power has to follow. This is exactly what we can get from decentralized technology. We are not evolved enough to do without centralization probably; but centralized governance can be controlled by the decentralized one. And participation in decentralized governance can eventually become the common narrative for the people.
In next posts I’ll explain the concrete set-up of Power DAO, built on the ideas of practical usage of decentralization tech for social interactions. Stay tuned :) #PowerDao
New token?
