Two part question: If you reformat an old laptop that

was previously connected to your identity, then you run bleachbit, then you flash linux, then you install btc and xmr nodes which run over tor 1) is it possible to link those nodes to your identity (through hardware printing or otherwise) if so what is the worst that can happen? and 2) if an adversary gets hold of that laptop what is the worst that can happen? Can they steal your btc/xmr? Will they be able to identify which of your BTC/XMR you have synced with those nodes? Block transactions? Can they deanonymize your btc/xmr etc?

Probably not a significant reply, but wondering if you'd be running your own node in this scenario? If so, you really don't have to worry about that. And I imagine only XMR will give you anonymity, not BTC, you're only pseudonymous with it. If someone gains access to your PC, they'd just have to know the pass to access the wallet, I guess.

Considering that my btc is not anonymous would they be able to know my btc wallet was synced with that node? If so would they be able to locate the laptop hosting the node even if it run over tor? I wont keep any wallets on the laptop running the nodes. Does that mean my wallet address cant be identified if the only thing on the laptop is the nodes only?

Not sure I'm answering your question here, but if you are running a Bitcoin node and using that directly as a back end for your wallet it will have your xpub. This is not the case if you run a monero node or if you run an electrum server on top of your bitcoin node as an interfacing layer between bitcoin core and your wallet. I recommend you using full disk encryption on that laptop and disable/remove the battery so that if somebody takes it it shuts down and they have to break through the encryption to get your xpub. Alternatively, run an Electrum server on top of Bitcoin Core.

Thanks for the thorough answer. I have a follow up question. If the wallet will be on a different device how would the node have the xpub? Does every node have the xpubs of all wallets that are synced on that node? In which case how would an adversary know which xpub is mine versus the xpub's of other wallets synced on the same node?

Either way i will study about electrum server. I heard that electrum servers are compromised because they share data with chainanalysis? However, i dont know if this is hard coded into the electrum code or if only applies to servers run by electrum itself. Have you heard about this?

Maybe if you use electrum's servers but if you run your own electrum home server you are fine.

Bitcoin Core needs your xpub to be able to serve as the back end. But its not really designed to be used as a back end for more than 1 user. That's what Electrum is for. It indexes bitcoin core data and that allows it to respond really quickly to many different users. It doesn't store xpubs, rather wallets reach out to it to request information about addresses in the wallet. If an adversary seizes your Electrum server they cannot see what information was requested in the past. Chainalytics companies run many Electrum servers because some people connect to random servers instead of running their own. You can also connect to a specific Electrum server run by a community member that you trust.

There are two implementations you can consider, Electrs or Fulcrum. Electrs takes less space but is not really suitable for many users or deep wallets. If you are coinjoining your wallet will get deep (many addresses will be used and Electrs will be slow). Best run Fulcrum if you can.
