If "doing crypto stuff", this is a good thing to learn about. It is not paranoia, it is safety things that you should know about if you are managing money. Don't let others tell you otherwise.
How do you know that the associated public key is correct?
There is a downloadable key that you validate, separate to the file. The key is used to check that the package you downloaded is correct and unaltered.
