Does it matter whether I claim each week or once in a year? Cumulative fee would be the same?

I meant cumulatively. So if I would claim each week I would pay 3 each time, meaning in 7 months I would pay 80-110 ZIL for those claims.

That is correct, first need to claim any pending rewards then only can merge into one staking node

gZil minting will stop i 2 days at block 1483713. So, it is suggested to claim any unclaimed gZil before it as any unclaimed will be lost after that. Countdown can be seen on https://zilstream.com/tokens/gzil
