I think I can understand the relay chains are the

hubs for dot and ksm and their only function is to send data from one parachain to another. For any data manipulation smart contracts have to be used and so that is done via a parachain correct?

asset movement is what everyone is focused on first. but yes, remote invokation is going to be powerful. like the remote control of relay chain staking that I mention above. these are the kind of scenarios that kusama / polkadot uniquely enable.

sort of. the relay chain only has features focused on security, governance, message passing, etc. parachains are where adv functionality like smart contract functionality would live. but you could also have a parachain without smart contracts that offers specific functionality to users.
