When I use the parachain bridge on moonbeam and go from xcDOT to DOT on DOT network how is it 1:1? If I did one million xcDOT to DOT it would just do it?

Bradley Sokolowski
Yes

nope, XCM is a native cross-chain communication format, so it's a feature of Polkadot that allows native communication with the entire dotsama ecosystem in a fully secure manner

yeah, ofc, the conversion from xcDOT to DOT is indeed 1:1. this is because xcDOT is a native representation of the original DOT being held in Moonbeam's sovereign account on Polkadot. when you transfer xcDOT back to DOT, the XCM message execution burns the number of xcDOT returned to Polkadot. once burned, the remnant part of the message is sent to Moonbeam via the relay chain. Moonbeam will locally execute the XCM message's, and transfer DOT (the same amount of burned xcDOT) from the target parachain sovereign account to the specified address

So the sovereign account of moonbeam has a balance of xcDOT sitting in a wallet?

Bradley Sokolowski
So the sovereign account of moonbeam has a balance...

no, the sovereign account of Moonbeam on Polkadot holds the original DOT tokens. when you transfer DOT to Moonbeam, the XCM message execution on Polkadot transfers the amount of DOT to Moonbeam's sovereign account on Polkadot. then, Moonbeam mints the same amount of xcDOT so, the xcDOT tokens exist on the Moonbeam network, while the corresponding DOT tokens are held in Moonbeam's sovereign account on Polkadot. when you convert xcDOT back to DOT, the xcDOT tokens are burned on Moonbeam and the corresponding DOT tokens are released from the sovereign account on Polkadot
