Does all communication between parachains have to go through the

relay chain?

it was that way previously, but it is not the goal, and i'm pretty sure with the recent xcmp 1.0 update parachain to parachain communication is routed directly.

I thought that’s what the hub/relay chain was for

the relay is still providing security and guarantees around the cross chain messages, but the actual message payload is directly routed i believe. parity's idea is to push most / all adv functionality out to the parachains and keep the relay as light as possible. this allows the overall system to scale as much as possible.

Sounds good it should increase the tps for the entire network

Are you sure on that?

no. i asked our dev team but may not get an answer until tomorrow. if its not in xcmp v1 it is likely in the shortly upcoming v2. but regardless, i do know that parity's goal is to move parachain to parachain messages to be directly routed to keep the relay as light as possible.

Yes taxes, gas, code all can be simplified. Less exploits, less decentralized.
