The New Year night 31 Dec - 1 Jan is a true holiday. Some history. 7th Jan is an orthodox Christmas, and it was the main winter holiday before 1917. Then USSR gov, which was atheist, wanted to have a winter holiday, but not religious, to trump old tradition, so they created the New Year holiday. It became a tradition, everyone celebrated it. In modern Russia gov wants the church back to power, cuz they need it as one of instruments of control, so they now promote 7th of Jan as a holiday, but there are little orthodox christian who really celebrate it, so it is now a very official and artificial holiday.
