I am pretty sure war isn't happening, Putin is too weak and connected with the EU/US. Ukraine doesn't matter here, anyway it's under US control mostly. I see this as an attempt from Putin to get a better deal from US/Nato while EU/Germany especially can't push much because of high gas prices (in case of war and sanctions they will rise even more and their population would be very unhappy with this decision + economy would suffer). So probably Putin tries to achieve some guarantees of safety. Imagine if Canada or Mexico would become Chinese or Iranian military bases, how would US government, citizens would feel? Probably they won't allow this at the first place, but if they would they would try to do something with this later.

Yes, and now a lot of Cubas all over Russian borders (Poland, Baltic countries, Ukraine), some of them was part of Russian Empire/Soviet Union for centuries and has a lot of Russian speaking up there (and a lot of them identifying themselves as Russians). And all of this stuff was created by US when Russia was weak after Soviet Union crash. So this Putin attempt is pretty weak, he isn't doing anything since 2014 and back then he chickened and step back and made a situation even worse, fearing of sanctions etc.

No, he had all opportunities to annex parts of Ukraine where liveS a lot of pro-russian people (like Crimea) in 2014 but he refused, hoping to make Ukraine just neutral. It's not Biden, Russia just don't had or will ever have enough power to stand against NATO or US only. So only nuclear war is the option, but it's not happening, because everyone would die, so long and boring economic conflict and a lot of shitshow.
