Hey guys, not sure how noob of a question this

is but I can't be certain without asking, we've been seeing exchanges and 3rd party wallet companies start to impose sanctions on the Russians (e.g. metamask was insinuating the possibility, indirectly)

Now technically, there's no way to implement such sanctions (I'm assuming they're using the IP address?) at the native wallet level, like if a Russian person were using one of the official XEC wallets on their computer?

There might even be a risk in the case of a mobile wallet downloaded via google play or iphone app store, but let's say they go full safu and install the wallet directly on their pc (or if there's an apk for the phone maybe) - as I understand, blocking a native XEC wallet would be equivalent to compromising on an integral part of the XEC blockchain infrastructure, and as such probably isn't even possible right? Like, even if it were possible it would have to be approved (lol) by Amaury himself? 🙃

What is your concern ;) ? There's virtually no way one could prevent a wallet from transacting. Miners could censor some transactions but at some point another miner will mine a block and include it. Amaury himself could not prevent any wallet from transacting without a code change, change that would need to be accepted by the whole miners ecosystem.

For web wallets I guess the website could be blocked or the backend servers could be forced to block traffic from Russia or something maybe. (Do note you have the seed phrase so coins would not be lost) The first problem could be probably solved by using VPN or Something like that. The second issue would in the case of cashtab likely lead to different servers being rented or dedicated hardware set up I expect. There are solutions that would allow people to continue using that software For something like electrum ABC its even more difficult to block. The wallet software is fully open source and you can chose the server you connect it to. So anyone can spin up a electrum server that relays the network information and broadcasts transactions to the rest of the ecash network.

thanks so much Philip for the extensive answers 🤗 seems like electrum ABC is the way to go 🚀

That is the most decentralised option. But can easily import the cashtab seed into electrum abc so for now cashtab still will be a perfectly fine solution for mobile.
