Defichain please? A related question...when will Ledger access be available?
Both desktop and light wallets are as secure as your make it. In the sense that you do not give out your seed words or passphrases to anyone. Technically, you can say the desktop wallet is ‘more secure’ since you also need a local copy of your wallet.dat to restore. But desktop wallet is a full node wallet, so unless you plan to run a masternode or willing to keep your pc running almost 24/7, light wallet is more convenient for most. Ledger was on the roadmap for 2022 if I remember correctly, but that’s off the top of my head right now. I don’t think there are exact dates.
I've been running the desktop node for a couple weeks now. The memory required is minimal so given the performance issues of the light wallet, I actually prefer it. It does need to be left running otherwise you have to wait for the blockchain to resync. Overall though unless you need to use a Vault, I'd say it's well worth it.
Thanks both of you. If one did need to use vault, what would be your answer? I assume it is the same answer...desktop wallet?
Which performance issues on the light wallet are you facing?
If you need to use a vault you would actually want the lite wallet (iOS/Android app). You may be able to use vaults on the desktop, but if so it would have to be through the node CLI. I wouldn't run the desktop node on a laptop, but if you're setting up a new one, you can save yourself a lot of time by downloading a snapshot of the blockchain (technically less secure though)
Mostly just clunk interacting with the blockchain. For example, since I reinvest my LM rewards, I'm posting 2-3 transactions a day, and at least a couple of these transactions per week will return "Sent but not confirmed." They're always confirmed by the time I see the message (verified on DeFiScan) but since the timeout for that message is around 10-ish minutes I believe, that's a lot of wasted time for accounting. Most of the time it takes about 2-3 minutes to see confirmation. The other advantage with the desktop wallet is I can get the accounting info I need for each transaction almost immediately (most likely due to the underlying node.)
Hi Ronnie. You say the memory used for the dekstop wallet is minimal, which it appears to be. Do you know why, then, it takes SOOO long to sync, if there isn't much data to sync?
Yes. Because it is duplicating and verifying the blockchain on your local drive from block 1. And there's almost 2 million of them now. That's why it may be worth your time to download a snapshot. All but the most recent couple of thousand blocks will be dumped on to your drive at once. The price is it is not as secure.
Hi - I downloaded the snapshot when I installed the wallet. I log on every 3-4 days to the desktop wallet - I assume you don't mean to download the snapshot each time? What do you mean "the price is less secure"?
You generally only need to download a snapshot if you’re installing from scratch. If your pc is kept on and you’re syncing every day it won’t matter too much. If you happen to step away for a holiday for example and didn’t turn your pc on for a week, downloading a snapshot might be faster to get you back on track than waiting for a sync.
