Shouldn't the network be ran on something decentralised like Flux or Akash?
Instead of AWS.
Would be interested to know your thoughts.
It can be run on anything really, we just provide options
If it's a simple solution which I'm guessing it is I'd be interested if long term it's ran via those type of networks. Surely nothing is actually striving for decentralisation if it's ran on Azure / AWS etc. I guess in many ways it's a philosophical question more than anything.. ie how does one define decentralisation.
You think cloud computing is more centralized than the iteration before it ?
Good question, it's for sure not like it was in the past, however shouldn't projects be striving for less centralisation on the cloud computing front if it's an easy transition. I guess it's a question of priorities and reliability.
Hmm, decentralization is based on vote percentage, logically what you are saying makes no sense . Especially given we support on chain stake delegation
A Casper node/validator can be set up on pretty much any hardware and any provider as long as it has a stable, 24/7 internet connection and a static IP address. The hardware requirements aren't that high - only storage but this will change from currently 2TB to probably ~500GB for a full node or MUCH less if you don't sync down to genesis -> this requires 1.5 though. 1.5 will go live on TestNet tomorrow, so a bit more than 24h from now. So AWS and Google Cloud are "more supported" by providing some templates and faster set up I think (didn't try it myself) but the installation on any Ubuntu machine takes like 20 minutes if you know what you're doing.
From someone who has done this well
I appreciate your take on the subject. How one defines decentralisation is different from the next person and these conversations are always interesting. I do agree with you on the vote % and on chain staking perspective though.
Yeah... I think I have like 8 nodes running rn? Incl. backup nodes, MainNet + TestNet etc. So if you copy & paste the installation steps it's really super fast and straightforward. Kudos to Joe and whoever else built all that 😊
Appreciate your info! I agree that the legacy providers deployment is a little faster from my experience too. I just thought it was worth discussing. Thanks
Sure, discussions - if based on facts and with the intend of being helpful - are always welcome on my side 😊
Where can I go to get the copy and paste steps to set up a node?
Hello DeMario, if you are interested in starting a node you can see the documentation here. You can also take a look at the documentation here: https://docs.casper.network/operators/
The more important question is: Where do you get enough CSPR to get a slot in the top 100? Without you won't earn rewards and can run a fullnode only. The instructions can be found on https://docs.casper.network
Thanks. For clarity I have to be in the top 100 Casper holders or all I can do is only run a full node? I’m just starting to get Casper this month.
Exactly. You can see other validators on https://cspr.live. Last time I checked the smallest validator had around ~4M CSPR total stake - that is self-stake and stake of others, both together count.
