FAQ: MWEB & Mobile Wallet Support

— — — — — — — — — —

😳 What?
After Litecoin Core v24 upgrade, mobile wallets can implement & support MWEB features, including improved fungibility & privacy:
"(Litecoin Core v24 will include) P2P Support for Light Clients - To allow for mobile and other more user-friendly wallets".

Users can track progress of MWEB related features here.

😲 When?
Current estimate is late summer / early fall:
"This (Litecoin Core v24 release) will be a lengthy process taking us well into the summer, but the end result should be a new release that’s up-to-date with bitcoin core, and will include all of the new MWEB features everyone has been waiting for."

- MWEB Has Officially Activated (May 20, 2022)

🤔 Light Node?
"A light Node does not download the complete blockchain. Instead, it downloads the block headers only to validate the authenticity of the transactions. Because of this reason light nodes are easy to maintain and run. Lightweight nodes use a method called Simрlifiеd рауmеnt vеrifiсаtiоn (SPV) to verify transactions. Lightweight nodes are served by full nodes to connect to the Litecoin network. They are effectively dependent on the full nodes to function."

🤔 P2P?
"Peer-to-Peer or P2P is a network in which computers share data directly with each other without the need of a central server. Peer-to-peer is a feature of, for example, decentralized cryptocurrency blockchains, like Litecoin."

😃 More MWEB Facts

Loshan goes more into details of what's currently happening behind the curtains and why:

"MWEB currently needs the user to have a full copy of the Litecoin blockchain. That’s not ideal, as most users use light clients like Electrum-LTC or mobile wallets like Litewallet.

Those light wallets use different technologies to only download transaction and block information relevant to the addresses it pertains to. However there are privacy tradeoffs as you are kinda asking a server (serving the blockchain data) for txs relevant to your wallet, meaning that server can kinda figure out some of the transactions you may be interested in. The other problem is that mweb data on the blockchain is stored differently, and current light sync technologies don’t support sending/receiving MWEB data.

That means there’s no way for Electrum or Litewallet etc to do any MWEB stuff, until someone designs a way to send MWEB data to light clients. And that’s what David’s been doing with LIP6 (litecoin improvement proposal 6).

We’re currently waiting for third party wallet developers to look into mweb LIP6’s design before it’s finalised and the server code is implemented into Litecoin Core. After that’s ready, third party wallets will be able to add LIP6 client code to sync MWEB data."
