Rooms aren't end to end encrypted. So in that way ...

A major problem with having group chats or rooms with E2E is that it would force manual approval and key exchange with a moderator or admin for every new member. Manpower wise, it would be a choice between proper forward privacy and functional usability. I wonder how difficult it would be to implement a chat system where you can have a selector between E2E and clear chatting in the same room, but those E2E would still only work between users who have exchanged and validated a key exchange first

Would there be a benefit of this over those two users simply sending direct messages to each other? Most platforms support e2e for DMS.
