In the first iteration it was mandatory to also vote to get the 1/3rd pool fees, which was abolished with the last staking upgrade, hence my question.

Yes just as Chosen said, you will no longer receive direct incentive for voting. If you vote now, your vote is going to be influencing the APR, generally. The initial 1/3 pool fees have already been distributed to governance through an increase in APR that was seen recently and as we move, apr will fluctuate due to unstake fee, voting fees etc And as we move further to our mainnet staking, APR will be influenced by volume!.

Voting is not needed to get governance rewards and it wasn't abolished, just that you won't get any reward for voting a pool.
