That is, on the Bitcoin mainnet, how are those funds bound if Bitcoin does not support complex smart contracts?

I believe you're receiving a synthetic asset representation for your BTC to be used on the AVAX network. You don't retain the native BTC on AVAX, however it's supposedly redeemable 1:1.
