not an immediate concern since I don't think they are suddenly going to steal everyone's private keys. But longer term I will move my crypto to a new hardware wallet provider. Maybe Trezor, but some recent FUD about them also. Any suggestions?

tokens are secured by private keys, funds can be moved by users to another address, I think it is not a security issue if people are using Eth chain with 2 of 3 multisig, as every user should do (Vitalik does it if you want an example of "¿who the hell does that?").

Ledger admitted they have the ability to extract user's private key from device via a firmware update, which also means malicious actors or rogue employee could exploit this backdoor as the code is not open source.They previously said it was impossible to extract seed phrase from a device, but now apparently it's not. What's to stop government seizing your ledger and forcing a firmware update to extract private key from the device?

Private key ≠ Master seed phrase. What I wonder (and I just haven’t dedicated enough of my time to research) if the new recovery program is only available for newly generated wallets. As then it showcases no backwards compatibility and subsequently no backdoor to private keys.

They should have come out with a new product, but the "opt-in firmware update" is available on existing Ledgers suggesting a backdoor already exists. It may be there from a previous firmware update and they just lied. Unlikely, but still possible.
