It's a mess. We can see what needs to be done, but our political system is being run by the wing nuts on either side at the moment. But life is a pendulum, it will swing back towards sanity eventually.

I think the right to bear arms is pretty hard wired into the American psyche. A friend at work is liberal, forward thinking and very intelligent, but from Texas and would never agree to a ban on guns.

Well, politicians forget that the US isn't New York and DC. There's still a lot of wilderness where you are on your own and help may be days away. When we camp in these areas I carry. On the east coast, the population density is so thick that "every man for himself" is just insane. But the politicians are either "all the guns for everyone, everywhere," or "guns are evil and the root of all problems. " Really, it's an emotional dog whistle that either side uses, but neither actually has any intention of dealing with. It should be a state issue, not a DC issue. See, even I have strong opinions and I'm neither a gun nut nor a gun hater. They're just tools often misused.
