JPP does not have the protobuf dependency and the signature verification isn't bound to DNS CAs. Instead JPP has a json format (much simpler) but uses a quite complex GPG signature scheme where stuff has to be hardcoded in the wallet to be fully usable. JPP (v2) also have a multicoin support so all wallets would just have to scan 1 QR code and then the wallet would choose the appropriate coin to use. This seems in theory to be a good feature but in reality users are stuck with a "Please choose which wallet you are using" screen which sucks.
