Ok so this is what i know happened for sure: 1.

althornton unbanned George Donnelly
2. he did this against the other moderator's wishes / without asking them
3. they got mad at him for this -- like "WTF dude we banned that guy for a reason wtf?"
4. Althornton made a case to the other mods that 'hey man free speech wtf'
5. other mods got mad
6. i came in as "impartial" and un-modded althornton
7. it escalated up to Roger Ver.. Roger Ver quickly looked at the situation and sided with the free speech claim.. worried that perhaps censoring GD is against his principles.

so yeah i think that's the most innocent/factual interpretation of events and it sort of aligns with Roger's personality so.. it is what it is.
