answer is something like "Well Bitcoin Cash is just Bitcoin: a p2p electronic cash system. Did you know that when Bitcoin was launched in 2009 by Satoshi Nakamoto, it was intended to be a consumer currency? Since then, it has become an investment commodity captured by institutions - you've probably noticed how there is a lot of hype around Bitcoin but very few places are accepting it as a currency right? Well Bitcoin Cash is the version of Bitcoin that is still continuing that path of being a p2p cash economy."
Seems like that could be simplified quite a bit, I wonder if simplification would make it easier for the person asking the question to arrive at the obvious conclusion. Something like “Bitcoin Cash is a cryptocurrency blockchain that has been working toward its primary goal of being a p2p electronic cash system since 2009.” I’m sure this could be worded better, but it’s short and factual.
My explanation is not the shortest, definitely, and brevity matters a lot. BUT I'm happy to sacrifice a little bit of brevity to plant the more important seeds of greater understanding. In a real conversation, saying all of that stuff takes about 15 seconds, and while 90% of it is going to go over the receipients head (especially if they have very little crypto context), it will resonate with them later when they do some more research, watch the podcast, discuss crypto with other people etc.
