conspicuous number, opinions about it is like assholes, everyone has one.
but past feedback has indicated that the real pain people have isn't with the 10 minutes vs 2 minutes, the real problem is with the high variance hour-longs. people would have much less of a problem with it if our blocktime is as kinda-consistent as btc. but:
1. we're a minority chain inherently susceptible to higher variance. the lower the ratio the worse this gets.
2. at different stages of the fall we had different countermeasures, they each failed at lower ratios. 2 minute block is an even more radical one that maybe will bring some relief at this ratio of 0.005-0.006. so what happens when it erodes our bitcoin-likeness and the ratio dumps further? do you guys have any more consicuous and easy to consume number to screw with?
3. the reason i said it harshly "it's like asshole" is because if you're willing to tweak the difficulty formula there are less disruptive means to do so. if we say tweak ASERT's halflife from 2days to 8hours https://upgradespecs.bitcoincashnode.org/2020-11-15-asert/ , we gain a large boost in responsiveness, likely way more in UX than 2min blocks, at the cost of some resilience to selfish mining, and virtually no disruption to anyone who's not an electron-cash user.
but nobody cares about that, because people talking about blocktime barely know ASERT exists much less its math. people just want to hang to an easily digested number and get mad at it whenever they have another hourlong block.
