I guess I'm a little confused in their github's readme.

It says it's a full node and indexer but says it needs a bchn bridge node to connect to the bch network?

in its current iteration, it does require a separate BCHN node to validate scripts. the advantage here is that as long as BCHN (or future equivalent) is still compatible with the network rules, the indexer should never need any updates to also continue working.
