So does Ren becoming a layer 1 add more utility

to the REN token? Or is the only usecase still to bond 100k ren to operate a node. How is gas paid? - We need more utility for $REN

Doesn’t change the utility at all. Gas for multichain application transactions can be paid in any token. Multichain apps are just another feature of RenVM (in addition to interoperability) that will increase volume and fees accrued to Darknodes.

One of the beautiful things about REN is that it's utility is simple and relevant.

Ren is still an erc20 though. If we're transitioning to a L1, that implies converting REN token into our own native token as well as all of the future projects building on ren.

Markus is right. REN is only the Darknode bond. You can still use SOL in Catalog eg and pay for gas with that SOL.
