I wish VC didn't matter, but it's often necessary for hiring and marketing growth. That said, crowdfunding and bootstrapping are common in crypto, and I wouldn't give projects a yellow flag for not having VC if they have cash some other way. People forget that VC usually comes with strings attached, and VCs tend to structure companies to have a short-term profit focus, which tends to ruin projects imo. VCs like projects where they can get in on the ground floor then dump on everyone else. They're often not a good thing.

Is this really true? https://twitter.com/taschalabs/status/1464323107196325888?s=21 You could have 1000 dapps no one uses or 5 apps people tens of thousands of people use.

I've been a part of and seen many examples where VC's short term needs trump the projects and customers needs, stifling and occasionally ruining what otherwise could have been an awesome project. Investors need to see a return on their investment regardless of what it does to the project/company. It's a spectrum though, and like you mentioned, it's often times a necessary evil. It certainly isn't always good, despite the VCs themselves wanting you to believe it is. The same goes for things like banks, credit card companies, and loan providers... you're their product and of course they want you to think highly of them.

We've gotten past the point where VCs can capture a signficant part of the network. The engagement of VCs and professional investors is quantitatively different coming this late into the launch. We are talking about well funded and connected groups capturing maybe 4% of the total supply. That's an order of magnitude less than the 40% common to most VC presale/ICO projects. I think we can afford to bring on valuable partners to some extent. Though to be frank, it will be hard to find more than 2-4M TLOS available now.

I was primarily talking about VCs capturing significant parts of individual projects, rather than entire networks. Both can be equally as debilitating though. Taking on investment or selling equity in any form can drastically change the direction a project was heading.
