My gf has a college project where she needs to come up with 25 ways to reaxh the top of a 10 story building. This is what the teacher said. for wednesday: please present 25 solutions for: “how many ways can i get onto the roof of a ten story building?” you will easily come up with many reasonable solutions like taking the stairs, the elevator or dropping onto the roof from above. finding 25 possible solutions is really easy. but for many of your solutions suspend reality and think some impossible things. you need to go beyond the obvious and practical and explore. sometimes thinking the impossible can be the seed for new practical insights later. einstein imagined, at the age of 16, about what would it be like to chase a beam of light. this kind of thought experiment can sometime lead to new practical ideas. picasso said that reality must be torn apart. so tear the possible apart. rethink to discover, get better at talking to yourself, see time and motion as kinetic forms, ask, must function always make the form, look for pairs in things, sometimes accidents are a process.so encourage disruptive thinking and allow yourself to be wrong a lot. some past ideas for this little exercise. some of my students last term were making a list of how many rules that adults follow about reality can they break? "one asked what is a building? are we being too obvious? its ten somethings high with a top… thats 11 things, and how tall, thick, wide etc. is each floor, and whats a floor? are they stacked on top of each other or what etc. etc. so… lets redefine and rethink what this thing with 11 separate parts can be.” who or what is it for… people, ants... uh! be an adult and be a child sometimes. think possible and impossible things. some past shown ideas: what if the building was a tall 10 layered chocolate cake with an icing(roof) made of sweet frosting… i give the cake to a giant that can't eat sweets and i wait till he eats all the cake and leaves the frosting behind. then i climb onto the frosting. or i build the building on a beach and wait for the waters to rise for 10,000 years and i swim on to the floating top. or i stack up 3 oreo cookies (ten layers) and add an extra layer of that inside stuff as the roof. then i get 1000 ants to be my avatars and they eat the 10 layers. i then get the top layer before they do.
