I redeem them during period? How fast can I access them?

Anyone can participate in normal governance, but you have to commit during certain commitment period that typically last 2-3 weeks. Next one will occur when the current period ends on Dec 31.

You can currently lend your Algo in Defi protocols like folks finance or Messina one to receive rewards.

Rewards are released at end of the three month period. Some of the Defi apps handle them a bit differently so it can vary a bit. With vanilla Defi your stake never leaves your wallet but you cannot go below your committed amount and must vote.

If you are participating via regular governance the algo will not move from your wallet. But to get rewards, you have to maintain the algo you have committed in the address and take part in voting

Yes if you move enough Algo to go below commitment you will no longer receive rewards but you are able to do so whenever you choose to.
