Is there a reson we use 30 second block times,

and not 1 second like the other scalable POW?

Consensus... Given the speed of light, and size of the earth, and network latencies: You can't achieve a true decentralized POW, if you don't have a minimum block time..

Thanks, so what is KAS trading off for their 1’sec block time and 10 sec finality time?

I was trying to find an explanation by Doug going into details. Here is the part that Pascal was referencing about speed of light and distances 👇 https://x.com/BlockchainDoug/status/1373709528533975043

from chatgpt: Kadena's block time could theoretically be shortened, but doing so would come with various implications and trade-offs that need careful consideration. Here are some potential implications of reducing the block time: 1. Increased Orphaned Blocks: Shortening the block time can lead to an increase in orphaned blocks, which occur when two blocks are mined at nearly the same time. The network can only accept one block, leading to the other block being discarded. This can reduce the overall efficiency and security of the blockchain [[❞]](https://coinmetro.com/learning-lab/kadena-blockchain-everything-you-need-to-know). 2. Network Stability and Security: Faster block times mean that blocks are added to the chain more frequently. While this can improve transaction throughput, it can also reduce the time nodes have to propagate and validate new blocks, potentially leading to more frequent chain reorganizations and reducing the overall security of the network [[❞]](https://101blockchains.com/kadena-blockchain/). 3. Propagation Delays: As block times decrease, the network has less time to propagate new blocks to all nodes. This can result in increased latency and higher chances of network forks, where different parts of the network temporarily disagree on the state of the blockchain [[❞]](https://docs.kadena.io/build/quickstart). 4. Resource Usage: Shorter block times require more computational and bandwidth resources to handle the increased rate of block creation and propagation. This can lead to higher operational costs for nodes and miners, potentially centralizing the network as only those with significant resources can participate effectively [[❞]](https://www.kadena.io/blog/redefining-blockchain-energy-use-how-kadena-s-scalable-pow-outperforms-traditional-crypto-mining) [[❞]](https://101blockchains.com/kadena-blockchain/). 5. Transaction Confirmation Times: While shorter block times can reduce the average time it takes for a transaction to be included in a block, they do not necessarily mean that transactions will be confirmed faster. Confirmation involves more than just inclusion in a block; it requires subsequent blocks to be mined to ensure the transaction is secure. Therefore, the perceived improvement in transaction speed might be less significant than expected [[❞]](https://101blockchains.com/kadena-blockchain/). In summary, while reducing Kadena's block time could potentially enhance transaction throughput and reduce latency, it would also introduce challenges related to network stability, security, resource usage, and overall efficiency. Balancing these factors is crucial to maintaining a robust and secure blockchain network.

Also from gpt: Kaspa achieves a block time of 1 second primarily due to its unique use of the GHOSTDAG protocol, which allows it to maintain high throughput while ensuring security. Unlike traditional blockchains that form a single chain of blocks, Kaspa's blockDAG (Directed Acyclic Graph) structure allows multiple blocks to be created and confirmed simultaneously. This structure mitigates the issues of orphaned blocks and selfish mining, which are common in linear blockchains like Bitcoin [[❞]](https://kaspa.org/features/) [[❞]](https://kaspa.org/). The GHOSTDAG protocol orders all blocks in the DAG without orphaning any, thereby enabling frequent block generation. This high frequency of block creation allows Kaspa to achieve near-instantaneous transaction confirmations. Each block references multiple predecessors, allowing the network to incorporate all mined blocks into the ledger efficiently, enhancing scalability and reducing confirmation times to as low as 10 seconds for full confirmation [[❞]](https://www.whykaspa.com/) [[❞]](http://wiki.kaspa.org/). The implications of such a fast block time are significant. It enables high transaction throughput, making Kaspa suitable for use cases requiring rapid and frequent transactions. However, managing such a high rate of block generation requires robust infrastructure and network bandwidth to handle the increased data flow. Additionally, while the GHOSTDAG protocol ensures security, continuous monitoring and updates are necessary to maintain network integrity as it scales [[❞]](http://wiki.kaspa.org/en/kaspa) [[❞]](http://wiki.kaspa.org/).

Apparently, doesn't matter. Look at the mcaps!

What’s the point without smart contracts?

I mean it's much easier to reach a consensus with a list of UTXOs. With Smart contracts, you have to reach a consensus for a hundreds of Gb database, and distributed contracts execution. Dropping smart contracts support relax many constraints.

on majority of things ppl do its not important and can be done without SC, but it will be there also
