The simpler version: Each time your account sends a transaction it also sends the transaction number (the Nonce). It tells the blockchain: Hey, this is transaction number 1, number 2, number 3, etc. This way, "the blockchain" knows how to process the transactions in order, so if you send 2 transactions (or more) at the same time, it won't execute them in random order. You can tell how many transaction an account has made by just looking at the nonce.
