Ofcourse it works. Maybe you are typing wrong password or use the same old file, I don't know. Download the new file, use the new password and it will work. That is how restoring a wallet works..

Your wallet is as safe as you make it to be. If you never share your secret phrase and you don't login on obscure websites with the json file and password..there is no problem.
