Ripple is largely funded by sales from escrow, which means Ripple has no interest in driving down the price. Furthermore they would be allowed to sell much more from the Escrow than they do, so I dont think they try to keep the price low.

it's an act of balancing in fact. They are driving the price lower to some extent with their escrow sales (directly on the market and by 'funding' 3rd parties which themselves sell for USD on the market), but can't drive it too low either, to keep up the spirits. They have so-called market makers for that.
