Progress is quite good, we have contracts for storing and updating sidechain data on the main chain, and also to transfer trustlessly from the sidechain to the mainchain.

Good question. So the current plan is: * polish the paper and do a good quality presentation * consider and describe some use-cases Then let's see how some use-case may be implemented. Eventually, there could be even a framework to launch merged-mining or federation sidechains on Ergo.
