4GB RAM with HDD over 100GB is more than enough but when I had the class, one student on close to that spec had trouble running a docker container.

for a lappy i would say 8GB to 12GB and 1TB of disk, also take note that an SSD should be at least 2/3 empty if you want to maximize its lifespan
