im not arguing ethics, etc. but Im wondering what is the incentive and how do these things play out in the real world.
Do the companies that use mysql, postgres, node, python, etc. financially support these projects so the maintainers are incentivized to not break backwards compatibility?

Also yes, the big companies do
But probably not mainly for backwards compat
If you change frequently, you risk no one wanting to use your software
