Do people still use that?

For sure. Zabbix is not a classic monitoring solution. If you use discovery rules and setup TimescaleDB as its backend database, you can cover small to medium cloud based enterprise monitoring use cases with Zabbix fluently.

I'm very familiar with it, however I've moved on to a Grafana + Prometheus based solution

That's a good stack. There are lots of them and yoh may invent yours. E.g. osquery agent+osquery prometheus exporter on clients + prometheus with influxdb as backend database + grafana alerting (optionally grafana oncall).
