Could anyone explain to me what is a "reference type"? Everywhere

I look it seems that the term is outdated, but I still can't get a grip on what types are references, and what are not

for example I was reading an article about company using very large map, and they had to use integers as keys, because those are not references and therefore are not garbage collected. Is there any truth behind this?
