Uhm node is a single threaded JavaScript runtime. If you expose node directly to the internet (which you can), you can only run one process at a time. You should use nginx in front of node, so that nginx will manage any number of node servers running simultaneously. Both node and nginx are fast. Their purposes are slightly different.
