It became popular due to its decent security, "Write Once, Run Anywhere" principle, and other reasons (google-able, check out wiki history). After it became popular, it earned large community support, so today it's a quite powerful tool. People still learn it, because it's still widely used. This will be true for JVM languages for a long time.
