am pointing to 16 bit processor but now a days that term is used for 32bit processor?
x86 refers to the common set of 086, 186, 286, 386, 486, 586 and 686 as well as x86_64, it however is more often used to refer to architectures between 386 and x86_64 and their common instruction sets as those are the 32bit ones. x86_64 can be used as if it was a 686, 686 as if it was a 586, etc etc because they are built on top of the base of each other (hence why writing a x86_64 kernel is a great way to get eye cancer at the cost of 3 persons worth of sanity)
