booting on real mode only allows you to do 16-bit addressing and use 16-bit instructions, so I enter unreal mode, which allows 32 bit addressing AND most importantly I still have access to real mode BIOS calls. I've never messed too much with protected mode, and I plan use it only with my kernel.
