For mid-lvl you need to get basic lvl @ algorithm,

algebra, discrete math, etc, so this stuff in full time get at least one year (optimistic view) then you go to learn how to apply this to code.
In mean time you can play with c code for get the basic.
C need deep math undestanding, witout it maybe your code work, but not go to be a efficient one, this raise the question: why i code in C if i get better result from .......?
If you dont want to get in math stuff, go to java or interpretated one like python, etc
