Technically you can take the black and white image...

I tend to not use the additive filter as i tend to do my color correction in a way to make the solid color saturated so i just put the glow "behind" the glowing object or to use a max blending rather than the additive one

yeah lighten does generally keep the consistency of the image better yes. Though additive does give that halo like glow that I personally like.

Technically you can take the black and white image of the terminal, blur it and merge it with base with additive filter and it will seem like a glow filter.
