If android studio is used to make android app and xcode is used to make IOS apps what IDE or software is used to make Software applications?

Wdym by software application? You mean desktop or what? Doesnt matter anyways. Yes AS/xcode is used for Android/iOS apps but you dont have to use said IDEs to do that. In fact you can use AS for regular java and xcode for C in mac. Languages arent tied to IDEs, IDEs are. The holy trinity for java is NetBeans, Eclipse and IntelliJ but you can absolutely go for something else or just notepad
