I have some experience in software development, specifically in mobile (android, ios) and backend.
I want to learn some game development now. What do you think, how much time does it take to reach “3D games level” ?
Nowadays you can make 3D games using existing game engines, such as Unity3D and UE4, and it takes not much time to make a very simple 3D game. But the more complex the game the more time and effort it takes (and the growth is exponential to complexity). If you want to make a 3D game without a high level game engine, then it will take time, I don't want to guess how much, but I would say, more than a year. And that's only about programming, there's also content (models, textures, animations, levels, sound, music, etc.) that also need to be taken in consideration if you plan to develop something.
With an existing 3d skill. You can make a game in 3 months. But if you are learning 3d from scratch. Then that's another 3 months added to you. Note: when I mention 3 months it solely depends on your consistency in mastering the softwares. And this is only achievable if you restrict yourself to only two softwares(i.e one 3d software and one game engine) anything more and you will spend extra time trying to get results using other softwares that will prolong your project completion.
If you intend on adding cut scenes. Then your game might take a year to complete.
Just start making games, why are you bothered with the time frame it will take to learn game programming? It may take years to months. There is no real way of knowing that unless you dive in yourself in game development.
A year? He can just use OpenGL and SOIL for textures, there's no way making a small 3d game would take a year
Yes, that's the minimum I would give to make a complete 3D game without an engine, without having done it already.
If you had 0 experience you wouldn't make a full 3d game though
I can't understand, do you imply that is too small amount of time or too big?
It's too big of a project to start if you are just learning 3D graphics with a library instead of an engine
