That depends on DBMS. E.g. Postgres doesn"t reserve space for dynamic datatypes.

Depends on the DBMS ... I believe in postgres it does not (VARCHAR without the size is valid there)

It reserves the space, but I don't know that it could actually be considered using it. I could be wrong though.
